Modeling Events

If you are using foam and you want to try a model without pins you may choose to purely subtract from the foam to represent your ideas and concepts. You are diagramming information on these models. You are also welcome to sculpt both sides of the foam if you find a use for this technique. Craft is important in these models so if you are sculpting the foam use the correct tools and sand to finish.

Important craft issues ::

Sand off any black markings that may be on the face of your foam before you commence your work.

Sand foam with a fine grit to finish (models should be smooth).
If stacking the foam because you have smaller than 2 in foam, use Aileen’s tacky glue (gold bottle) and spread evenly between the two layers, apply pressure (stacking books on top), and wait for it to dry. Follow by sanding the layers smooth.
When using paper you may choose to stack two pieces of paper together, but never use glue.

If you are having troubles finding pins, try any craft store, varsity, target, kmart, rendr ect....they are there somewhere. If you are still having troubles get some piano wire with a diameter from .020” to .032” and cut it to your desired length. You will need wire cutters, this wire is tough and rigid.

Bring models on Tuesday so we can discuss any issues you are having. It is a work day, so you are required to bring work. You will not be allowed to just simply sit at your desk, there is always something to work on. In the following years you will have one studio per semester and you will be required to work for four solid hours. We are asking for two so get to work. Bring questions and concerns and we will all see you on Tuesday. This is the last day to ask any questions before we begin grading on Thursday.

Remember your official due date for all of this material is Thursday February 7. This day will be a pin up day so be prepared to have all your assignments collected, fixed, and ready to pin up.

my understanding is that the chronophotography and foam board is due on tuesday and that all FINALS of the projects listed are due on thursday.

My understanding was exactly the opposite, but now I think it's all due Thursday. Someone specifically asked when the foam project is due during lecture on Tuesday and was told that it was due Thursday. I know for a fact that Rex had said that the rest of the projects would be due Tuesday, February 5, but the blog now says Thursday, and Tuesday is a work day, so therefore, nothing is due until Thursday!

  5. You still should have your foam/paper models for Tuesday if you want to have input before they are graded. They are "due" on Thursday along with the Chronophotography and all you work so far. Both Brian and I said in class that everything is due on February 7. This is fact. But if you want input you need to bring what you can on Tuesday. It is a work day, but about half of the class last Thursday did not bring work.

For the Chronophotography Walmart offers whats called a luster print and a glossy print as choices to print out. I know that we arent suppose to have glossy pictures is Luster print ok?

A better explination of Luster is "Luster is a slightly textured paper with more vibrant colors than Matte and a soft sheen finish. It resists fingerprints."
    Thanks.

what if we can't find any pins? is it okay to use t-pins instead of the flat head ones or piano wire?

what if we already did the project using the 'tpins'? does that mean it needs to be redone with piano wire?

when is says to sand off any black markings off the face of our foam, does that mean off the part that our pins are sticking out of? or sand off the black from the bottom of the foam, as in there should be no black markings completely....

  10. there should be no black markings at all on the foam...it should be a solid pink or solid blue.

  11. If you have already completed the model with T-pins I suppose this will have to work, but for anyone who has still not worked on this and cannot find pins, you can try the model without using pins or just use piano wire. For the T-pin person I hope you are using the T-pins for general shape as well as surface. Using a lot of these pins can be quite effective, but using just a few can be bit boring.

The ".5 inch" foam we bought is slightly larger than .5 in. When we glue the four pieces together, it adds up to almost 2.5". Is this o.k? If not, how should we cut it down?
