Ex.#2 Charting Things

You make two excel spreadsheets.
  • One has all the things that are objects in your room listed, categorized and measured in extensive and material ways. (Color, volume, location, relationship to other things, etc.)
  • One has all the things that happen in your room listed, categorized and measured in durational, and situational ways. (frequency, duration, intensity, area, relationship to other things, etc.)
Make sure you record the size (volume) of everything. Use the calculations tools in excel, use cell shading, and grouping to complete and refine the two charts. You should be crafty with excel, as you would any other medium.

Print them each to fill an 11 by 17 sheet of paper.

________________

That's the most important part above. Spend most of your time there and less on this next part. You'll use these charts above a WHOLE lot in this project.

Then, using charting and graphing tools in excel, make four graphics of the findings in each of your spreadsheets (% breakdown of colors, etc.) Print each of these 8 graphics individually on an 8.5 by 11 sheet of paper. (make sure that all graphics are oriented on the sheet the same way)

The TWO printouts of the spread sheets PLUS FOUR graphics of your chart of object things PLUS FOUR graphics of your chart of event things EQUALS 10 IMAGES.

You can include images of your room contents in the spreadsheet, if you wish but that is not a requirement, just a suggestion of one way of accomplishing this exercise.

Thanks that really helps to clear up some confusion.

is anybody else confused? as i understand it, we have to measure our objects and find the volume, then take those numbers and put them into excel?

what are examples of duration? like a book we'll use one semester or a box of tissues?

are we supposed to have so many objects measured?

how many rows and columns are we supposed to have?

  4. Anonymous16/1/08 19:41

are we supposed to make our spreadsheet bigger (like literally enlarge) to fit the 11 by 17 or what?

    Duration is time.

I'm guessing you need all the objects measured and recorded in your spreadsheet with the other categories.

The examples of categories for durational and extensive are what could be used in our spreadsheet and more if you can think of others.

I just made my spreadsheet landscaped and taped a blank paper to the bottom of the excel list. I don't have much objects/events going on in my room. I think he's going to have people suggest what other things should be on the spreadsheet??? not sure

wait, we have to measure every SINGLE object in our room?! or do we have to have so many measured?

I guess get enough... not all...whatever you feel that is good? Don't over think this assignment too much...

what does it mean by four graphics of your chart?
Is that like 4 graphs or does it mean like having a legend or what?

    ReplyDelete
  9. Anonymous16/1/08 22:15

    4 graphs of duration
    4 graphs of extensive
    1 spreadsheet of duration
    1 spreadsheet of extensive
    = 10 images

As many items as you want. I would try as many categories as you can so you would have more options towards making your graphs. ie: % breakdown of colors

What does it mean by area?

    ReplyDelete
  11. Anonymous16/1/08 22:26

    Length x Width

    ReplyDelete
  12. Anonymous16/1/08 22:38

so do we find the area of our objects or the volume?

    ReplyDelete
  13. Anonymous16/1/08 22:42

what is a good example of duration to use? like a shopping bag in one's room since it won't always stay there?

    ReplyDelete
  14. Anonymous16/1/08 22:50

anyone know how to make the charts/graphs

    This assignment is pretty confusing...

what are ya'll using for duration?

  17. Anonymous16/1/08 23:03

how are we supposed to measure the volume of durational things? do we measure how long something is in our room or how long something takes place in our room? and if that, then how do we measure the event?

    ReplyDelete
  18. Anonymous16/1/08 23:09

i think its more of how long something takes place...beacuse there are some things that just stay in your room all year round

    ReplyDelete
  19. Anonymous16/1/08 23:10

how are yall measuring the volume of everything?

    ReplyDelete
  20. Anonymous16/1/08 23:14

    Durational should be EVENTS.
    Extensive is OBJECTS.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Anonymous16/1/08 23:17

so what counts as an event? two people hanging out? and do we measure it in minutes, seconds, etc?

    ReplyDelete
  22. Anonymous16/1/08 23:20

    you got it

  23. Anonymous16/1/08 23:47

What sort of relationship do we need to describe for extensive?

This project has been explained poorly. I would hope that with the experience that Bryan Rex claims to have he could direct a class in a more successful way instead of sending them off with a lost thought of confusion. I ponder why he insists on his pointless stories during a lecture that he is supposed to deliver pertinent information to a class that is new to the study. WHERE IS THE LOVE B_REX? Your attendance system is flawed. Let the students that want to be there attend and forget about the others.

  26. Ok this is ridiculous, I am staying up all night trying to figure out what to do. How am i suppose to calculate all these different things (excluding volume). I dont see how they expect us to do all this stuff in 2 days when we have other classes and not experienced in Microsoft Excel. I disagree with how this course is being thought and i am going to be pist if it doesn't get better.

this is ridiculous, i'm glad i'm the only one staying up and having trouble with this damn thing!

Don't worry, your not the only one. Three of us are still without a clue on how to do this.

  29. Anonymous17/1/08 05:07

i hate how we have to post them up for everyone to see, that way everyone will know if you screwed up or not

    ReplyDelete
  30. Anonymous17/1/08 05:12

At least we'll all be screwed together. . . . an orgy of poorly done projects!

  31. Is anyone else still without sleep and not even close to being done?

how far have yall gotten on it? we have 3 out of 10.

  33. Anonymous17/1/08 05:23

there are three of us in one room...no sleep...not done...very far. we have walked outside to wake up. the cold is helpful but really cold.

  34. Anonymous17/1/08 05:30

Haha . . . I'll have to try that. I have 3 more graphs and then I'm done. But I don't think my durational is right . . . I'm too tired to care at this point.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Anonymous17/1/08 05:36

Same here. I just want to be done with this so I can try to get SOME sleep. I just might pass out during class from being so tired.

i've stayed up ALL night and still confused. plus i think i did the whole damn project wrong!

  37. Anonymous17/1/08 07:36

can anyone explain how they did their charts bc i am COMPLETELY lost on that subject

    ReplyDelete
  38. Believe me you are not the only one having trouble with all this crap. Ive been up all night as well as other people. I think if enough people talk to him about it he will either give us more time or something.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Anonymous17/1/08 07:58

i just don't want to be the only one showing up w/out them... i mean i have tried but i just can't seem to get them to work so all i have are my 2 lists

WHOEVER WROTE THIS...WELL SAID! Couldn't have said it any better myself. He spends more time ranting on about pointless things when he could have used classtime to explain this project more fully. The sad thing is, I'm paying to listen to his lame jokes and confusing lectures....But what can you do about it, NOTHING.

i think you guys are taking this a little far. EVERYONE got confused but this is studio...a class that is based on creativity, so its understandable he wanted to leave things open for our own interpretation. if its so difficult for you and you feel that you have no other option but talk smack then you should maybe consider a different major because you are obviously not cut out for this kind of stuff. after all he was hired by more than qualified people for good reasons.

I never got the impression that architecture school was supposed to easy...on the contrary. It has the nickname "Architorture" because it is an extremely time-demanding program. We're fortunate to be part of a school that gives us a chance at a Master's degree in 5 years. Students in our field at most other colleges can't make that claim.

The College of Architecture at Texas Tech has a great reputation in the professional field, not because everyone has an easy ride, but because it challenges us to think and work hard. Mr. Rex is doing a good job. He is delivering a class in an enjoyable manner, but he's not going to babysit us.

And as for the person who commented on the attendance policy...I'm not your typical first-year student. I'm back for a second degree after seeing a little bit of the real world. If you think 3 absences in 4 month time period is so flawed, I question your work ethic.

Sorry for the rant, but I just really feel that some of you need of realize that you're not in high school anymore. Mr. Rex couldn't have said it better. You chose to be here. If you can't handle it, go to American Commercial College.

  43. For any of those who were offended by my comment, I am extremely sorry. What was said in class was a surprise to me because i did not view my comment the same way as the teachers took it. I am from a small town and I did not realize that I have to watch what I say on the internet. I understand now why i do have to watch myself because anyone can take things wrong.

I am not like those psychos that do terrible things. I am not a person that has problems with people, I am well liked by my friends. I said that comment like as if I was talking to a friend. I did not aim that toward the teacher in an attempt to get him to make things easier. Anyone and everyone gets mad, doesn't mean that they are going to do something crazy. I know there are a lot of crazy people in this world though and that is why I am saying sorry. That comment just showed my frustration and exhaustion from being up all night and I said something stupid. I did not mean what I said and if I could take it back I would. I am more than willing to give my full effort to do well in this coarse. And once again I am extremely sorry.

am I over simplifying this current project or what (profile knives).... Are we just supposed to get the profile of the bed or desk or something and map it into our chip board?- If so, then it doesn't seem like it will take the kind of time spent on the previous two projects.
